The air somehow felt fresher.
You slept better.
You relaxed more easily.
Then you came home...
...and within a few days you were back to normal.
Or were you?

Welcome to the Renovation Secrets Podcast. I am Natalia Pierce and today want to explore something fascinating.
Not why good spaces feel good.
But why we've become so accustomed to poorly performing environments that we no longer recognize them as problems.
Because the most dangerous design flaws...
...are often the ones we've stopped noticing.
Humans Adapt to Almost Everything
One of the greatest strengths of the human brain is its ability to adapt.
Scientists call this habituation.
When we're exposed to something repeatedly, our brain gradually stops paying conscious attention to it.
Think about living near a train track.
At first...
Every train wakes you up.
A few months later...
You barely hear them.
The trains didn't become quieter.
Your brain simply stopped prioritizing them.
We do this with smells.
Background noise.
Visual clutter.
Temperature.
Even discomfort.
Adaptation helps us survive.
But it also creates a problem.
If you've lived with poor lighting for twenty years...
...it simply feels normal.
If your kitchen has always had shadows...
...that's just how kitchens are.
If your bathroom fan sounds like a jet engine...
...you assume that's what bathroom fans do.
If every open-concept house echoes...
...well, houses just echo.
Except...
they don't have to.
We've Lowered Our Expectations
This might sound strange...
but I think we've unintentionally lowered our expectations of what our homes should actually do.
We expect our cars to become safer every year.
We expect our phones to become smarter.
We expect medicine to evolve.
Technology to improve.
Even coffee makers have become remarkably sophisticated.
Yet when it comes to houses...
our expectations haven't changed very much.
We still judge them primarily by:
How big they are.
How expensive they are.
How beautiful they are.
Maybe how energy efficient they are.
But almost nobody asks:
"Will this home reduce stress?"
"Will it improve sleep?"
"Will it help me focus?"
"Will it support healthy aging?"
"Will it improve my family's daily quality of life?"
Why?
Because we've never been taught that homes can do those things.
We Celebrate What We Can See
Here's something I find fascinating.
Imagine walking into two kitchens.
The first has spectacular marble countertops.
Beautiful cabinetry.
Designer fixtures.
Magazine-worthy finishes.
The second looks almost identical.
Except this kitchen was designed using evidence from neuroscience, lighting science, environmental psychology, acoustics, indoor air quality, and human factors research.
Which kitchen wins the design award?
Probably the first one.
Because we naturally celebrate what we can see.
Beautiful finishes photograph well.
Good air quality doesn't.
Proper lighting design is almost invisible when it's done correctly.
Acoustic comfort doesn't show up in Instagram photos.
A layout that reduces physical strain isn't obvious to someone walking through for five minutes.
Some of the most valuable parts of great design...
are the parts nobody notices.
Until they're missing.
The Cost of "Good Enough"
Building code establishes minimum standards.
Not optimal standards.
Minimum.
Think about that.
Minimum structural safety.
Minimum electrical requirements.
Minimum plumbing.
Minimum insulation.
Minimum ventilation.
Building code isn't asking:
"How do we help this family thrive?"
It's asking:
"How do we keep people reasonably safe?"
Those are very different goals.
Imagine if healthcare only aimed for the minimum.
Or education.
Or nutrition. Ok well we won’t go there because that is Pandora’s Box
Yet that's often how we approach our homes.
If it meets code...
we assume it's good.
When in reality...
it may simply be adequate.
And adequate isn't always enough to support long-term health and well-being.
Design Is Becoming a Health Conversation
For decades...
design has been viewed primarily as an art.
And it absolutely is.
Beauty matters.
Emotion matters.
Creativity matters.
But something remarkable is happening.
Science is beginning to explain why certain environments consistently make us feel calmer...
safer...
more focused...
or more connected.
We're learning that our surroundings influence stress hormones, sleep quality, cognitive performance, emotional regulation, and even social behaviour.
That doesn't diminish creativity.
It elevates it.
Because now design isn't just about creating beautiful spaces.
It's about creating environments that actively support human biology.
That's an entirely different conversation.
What WELLbuilt Is Really Trying to Change
People often ask me what WELLbuilt actually is.
And yes...
there are five elements.
Lighting.
Indoor Air Quality.
Acoustics.
Neuroaesthetics and Biophilia.
Accessibility and Comfort.
But those aren't really the point.
The point is changing the question.
Instead of asking...
"What kind of house do I want?"
We begin asking...
"What kind of life do I want my home to support?"
That's a profound shift.
Because suddenly every design decision has a purpose beyond appearance.
Lighting isn't just illumination.
It's biology.
Ventilation isn't just fresh air.
It's cognitive performance.
Acoustics aren't just about noise.
They're about recovery.
Comfort isn't convenience.
It's reducing daily friction.
And beauty isn't decoration.
It's something our brains and bodies actually respond to in measurable ways.
Closing
Most people don't realize they're adapting to their homes.
Until they experience something better.
A hotel.
A thoughtfully designed spa.
A quiet library.
A beautifully lit restaurant.
A home where everything simply feels... easier.
Those moments remind us of something important.
We don't just experience our environment.
Our environment experiences us.
It shapes our mood.
Our sleep.
Our stress.
Our energy.
Our relationships.
Every single day.
So here's the question I'd like to leave you with this week:
What have you accepted as "normal" in your home... that might actually be a design problem?
Maybe it's the room that's always too dark.
The kitchen that's always noisy.
The bedroom where you never seem to sleep well.
Or perhaps it's something you've stopped noticing altogether.
Because sometimes the greatest barrier to creating healthier homes... isn't poor design.
It's believing that poor design is simply the way homes are supposed to be.
Remember: just because something is common doesn't mean it's normal—and just because it's normal doesn't mean it's helping you thrive.
